The Council of Muftis, chaired by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdullatif Derian, on Thursday sounded the alarm on the delay in forming Lebanon's new government, warning of any attempt to tamper with the powers of the Prime Minister-designate.
"The Muftis' Council has maintained that the Cabinet formation delay is due to attempts to find fabricated norms that contradict the National Pact and Taef Agreement," the Council said in a statement.
"The Council has moreover called for the preservation of the executive and legislative powers' competences," it added.
"Conferees have also warned of tampering with the powers of the Prime Minister-designate, who is entitled by virtue of the Constitution, to form the government after unbinding parliamentary consultations," it concluded.
The Council convened at Dar-al-Fatwa under Derian's presidency, to discuss the latest developments on the local scene.
