Hundreds of people killed and wounded in a devastating earthquake followed by a tsunami in Indonesia

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (NDRA) announced today that " an earthquake has hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, killing at least 400 people and injuring hundreds, as rescue teams continue their efforts to reach the quake-stricken region."

"A total of 384 people have died so far, all of them in the tsunami-hit city of Palau," the agency said, warning that the toll could rise and adding that "about 540 people were seriously injured."

Bodies were seen among the scattered rubble near the city's 350,000-strong beach after being swept by waves measuring 1.5 meters high
