Kuching, Electronic sports (eSports) is becoming more popular among youths in Sarawak, Malaysia, thanks to the lucrative prizes of thousands of ringgit being offered, said Tupong State Assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
He said although this offered eSports operators and entrepreneurs the chance to generate income, there was a catch as they needed to apply for entertainment licence from local authorities, Malaysia News Agency (Bernama) reported.
These eSports centres find it difficult to obtain their licence because of the irresponsible attitude of some operators who abused their entertainment licence by conducting online gambling operations, he said when debating the State Supply Bill (2019) at the State Assembly sitting today.
He said the relevant ministry should tighten the laws on entertainment licences so that eSports would be able to thrive.
