AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE: NO PRESENCE OF LOCUSTS TO-DATE IN THE BEKAA VALLEY

The Lebanese Agricultural Research Institute indicated in a statement today that following the field inspection early this morning by its Director General, Dr. Michel Efram, on agricultural lands in the Bekaa, it was evident that there were no locusts in the area.

“The appearance of one or two locusts anywhere does not mean that the locusts have swept the area as it is rumored. Some locusts can also be found in mountainous areas, noting that the Ministry of Agriculture's control of the Sunn insect also contributes to combating locusts because the same pesticide is successful for fighting both insects," the statement added.

“In Syria, locusts are found in Daraa, Soueida, and Aleppo only, as the Syrian authorities are seriously fighting them. In Saudi Arabia, the control is carried out in the area of the sand dunes, but it is not sufficient, so groups head out towards Jordan and Syria, and perhaps some small groups towards Lebanon. The drop in temperatures on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, will trigger locusts to move away from Lebanon, as the westerly and northwestern winds continue," the statement reassured.
