Riyadh: The first-ever International Conference on Conjoined Twins, held under the patronage of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, concluded Monday in Riyadh with key recommendations aimed at enhancing care for such children. The conference aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in the care and treatment of conjoined twins.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the conference, which commenced on Sunday, brought together global medical experts, representatives of humanitarian organizations, government officials, as well as conjoined twins and their families from across the globe. Participants discussed various aspects of the condition, sharing insights and experiences to improve outcomes for affected individuals.
The event’s objectives included shedding light on rare instances of conjoined twins and sharing narratives of their successful separation and treatment journeys. It also explored potential international collaborations to meet the needs of con
joined twins and their families, providing them with necessary assistance. The conference highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to ensure comprehensive care for conjoined twins worldwide.
The Saudi Conjoined Twins Program has emerged as a worldwide beacon of hope and medical excellence, having handled 143 medical cases from 26 countries and carrying out 61 successful separation surgeries. This program continues to play a pivotal role in advancing surgical techniques and postoperative care for conjoined twins.
The timing of the conference aligned with the World Conjoined Twins Day, designated by the United Nations this year following an initiative from Saudi Arabia. The annual celebration on November 24 aims to amplify global awareness, care, and support for these outstanding children and their families. The event underscored Saudi Arabia’s commitment to leading global efforts in this specialized medical field.
