Saudi Esports Federation (SEF) chairman of the board of directors Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan emphasized that the New Global Sport Conference represented an essential first step towards a bright and prosperous future for games and esports.
He expressed his view during a speech at the opening of the activities of the second day of the conference, which concluded yesterday and was hosted by Riyadh over two days. The event received over 60 international speakers and over 1,200 entrepreneurs and experts, including more than 200 prominent global chief executives in esports, sports, technology, entertainment, business, investment, and others.
“Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the gaming and esports sector and its confidence in it has become a reality that the whole world sees, and the support of HRH the Crown Prince is the motivation for all of us to continue the path of development and innovation to make the Kingdom the center of the game and the home of global events,” Prince Faisal bin Bandar said.
The
conference’s second day featured six panel discussions that focused on the positive impact of esports on other industries, how esports has evolved from a niche subculture to a global phenomenon, and its ability to integrate with traditional sports to provide an unparalleled entertainment product for fans, while at the same time stimulating economic growth and bringing communities closer together.
One of the sessions focused on the importance of the gaming industry, which audiences are attached to for a long time and become part of their culture. Another session addressed the intersection of games with the sectors of art, fashion, filmmaking, and creativity.
The conference also included a special session that brought the audience to the oldest form of competitive sports, chess. Esports World Cup Foundation chief executive Ralf Reichert and world chess champion Magnus Carlsen discussed their ideas and experiences in a session titled “Chess, Esports: Strategy Redefined Together: From the Chessboard to the Di
gital Arena.”
“The essence of the Esports World Cup is gaming,” said Reichert. “When you set the rules, you format the competition, you have a winner and a loser, and that’s how it all developed. The same goes for traditional sports, including chess.”
Carlsen, 33, is a five-time world chess champion. “Chess has really evolved a lot to become more digital and has many Esports elements,’ he said. ‘I think the game in the Esports arena is an exciting opportunity. You play chess online, so there’s already that element in the game – but we need a different environment with a bigger audience and a better offer.”
