Riyadh: As Saudi Arabia advances its vision to become a leading global marine tourism destination, the Red Sea Authority has introduced a comprehensive regulatory framework to support the growth of recreational yachting, covering Saudi yachts, visiting yachts, and megayacht leasing to establish a safe, sustainable, and investor-friendly maritime environment. These regulations aim to organize yachting activities across all segments by clearly outlining the responsibilities of stakeholders, including yacht owners, cruise agents, charter operators, port authorities, captains, and crew members. They also streamline procedures for obtaining licenses and permits, boosting investor confidence and aligning with broader efforts to modernize the sector's regulatory landscape.

According to Saudi Press Agency, safety is a prominent feature of the new rules, requiring all locally registered, foreign-flagged, or chartered yachts to comply with rigorous maritime safety standards. Provisions include mandatory onboard equipment for rescue, firefighting, and communications, as well as the development of emergency response plans and ongoing crew training to ensure preparedness. Environmental sustainability, another core pillar of the framework, reinforces Saudi Arabia's commitment to preserving the Red Sea's marine biodiversity by mandating strict controls on pollution. Discharging waste, ballast water, oils, or any other harmful substances into the sea is strictly prohibited. Yacht operators must implement marine waste management plans, reduce plastic usage, and fully comply with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), with particular attention to protecting coral reefs and ecological habitats.

The regulations also prioritize the passenger experience by setting clear standards for onboard hospitality, comfort, and recreational offerings. These include spatial planning for better use of yacht interiors, enhanced safety measures, accessible marine activities, and inclusive services for persons with disabilities, the elderly, and children.
