Riyadh: The 21st United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) General Conference has officially commenced in Riyadh, marking the first time Saudi Arabia hosts this significant event. Branded as the "Global Industry Summit 2025," the event is a collaboration between UNIDO and the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, drawing participation from various Member States. According to Saudi Press Agency, delegates will gather until 27 November at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center under the theme "The Power of Investment and Partnerships to Accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals." The conference aims to tackle global challenges related to sustainable industrialization. In his opening remarks, Bandar AlKhorayef, the Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, emphasized the importance of Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Industrial Strategy in transforming the Kingdom's industrial landscape. He outlined over 800 industrial investment opportunities identified through 2035, focusing on sectors such as electric vehicles, robotics, and clean energy. The Minister also underscored Saudi Arabia's efforts to increase women's participation in industry, which has notably doubled in less than a decade. Furthermore, he highlighted initiatives aimed at empowering youth for advanced industrial careers, particularly in fields like artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced manufacturing. AlKhorayef reiterated Saudi Arabia's commitment to UNIDO's vision of a sustainable global economy, stating: "And may Riyadh be remembered as the city where ideas became action, where partnerships took root, and where nations came together to redefine the true purpose of industry, not merely to create wealth, but to build a better, more sustainable future for humanity." Vice Minister for Industry Affairs, Khalil bin Salamah, delivered the Host country statement, affirming that UNIDO's principles align with Saudi Arabia's industrial vision. He noted that industrial investments in the Kingdom now exceed SAR1.5 trillion, supported by 12,500 factories contributing to a growing industrial base. The opening day saw participation from government officials, international organizations, the private sector, academia, and entrepreneurs. Over 150 speakers are involved, including 20 ministers and 35 CEOs of global companies, with strong representation from Arab states, GCC countries, and Saudi industry leaders. Prominent speakers include Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih, Vice Minister for Industry Affairs Khalil bin Salamah, President of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology Dr. Munir Al-Desouki, and UNIDO Director General Gerd Mller. International officials and private sector leaders from companies like Huawei and ACWA Power are also attending. The conference features three thematic days: Investment and Partnership Day, Women's Empowerment Day, and Future Generation Day, each focusing on different aspects of industrial development and sustainability. Saudi Arabia's role as host underscores its posit ion as an emerging industrial leader, committed to a more inclusive economic future.
