Reef Saudi Empowers Shepherds and Boosts Livestock Sector

The Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program (Reef Saudi) is on a mission to uplift small-scale livestock farmers across the Kingdom. By investing in their capabilities and modernizing the livestock sector, the program aims to boost productivity, create economic opportunities, and bolster food security. Ghassan Bakri, the program's secretary-general, highlighted the need to support shepherds and, by extension, their communities. By improving livestock practices and expanding market access, the program seeks to increase farmers' incomes and preserve traditional herding knowledge. Additionally, the Reef Saudi is exploring ways to develop the livestock sector in arid regions, harnessing natural resources and creating value-added products from goat and camel milk. To achieve these goals, Reef Saudi has implemented a comprehensive strategy that entails establishing a genetic database for local breeds, conducting research to improve livestock health and productivity, providing veterinary services, and p romoting the adoption of modern farming technologies. The program also facilitates the formation of cooperatives, establishes efficient marketing channels, and ensures strict animal health standards. In 2023, the program made significant strides. It introduced innovative farming techniques, partnered with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture to improve breeding practices, and identified alternative feed sources, like cactus for example. Moreover, the program developed new products from agricultural waste, conducted feasibility studies for dairy processing, and trained farmers in essential skills, such as wool shearing and milk handling. To further support the livestock sector, Reef Saudi has established model farms in various regions and implemented a livestock registration system. These initiatives have all empowered small-scale livestock farmers and contributed to the overall growth of the industry. Source: Saudi Press Agency
