Riyadh: The National Livestock and Fisheries Development Program has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with global biotechnology solutions provider PhageGuard and Saudi-based poultry producer Tanmiah Food Company. This agreement was made in the presence of Vice Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Eng. Mansour Al Mushaiti.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the partnership aligns with the Kingdom's efforts to promote sustainable livestock production and improve the quality and safety of local products. This initiative focuses on adopting innovative solutions that reduce health and environmental risks, enhancing the competitiveness of national products both regionally and globally.
Under the MoU, PhageGuard will deliver its advanced biotechnology solutions through its local agent, Portalis Capital, to Tanmiah Food Company. Tanmiah will be responsible for implementing and localizing these technologies in the Saudi market. This step aims to support the development of the poultry sector, boost its operational and production efficiency, and establish a knowledge- and innovation-driven livestock industry.
The core of the partnership is the use of bacteriophage technology as a biological alternative to traditional antibiotics, addressing concerns over antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The phages specifically target Salmonella bacteria, reducing its spread and lowering dependence on antibiotics, thereby transitioning toward safer food production.
The application of this technology is expected to mitigate the risk of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella in animal products such as poultry and eggs. This will enhance the quality and safety of the final products and strengthen their competitiveness in both local and global markets.
