Riyadh: The General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA) has granted permission to General Motors (GM) Middle East to conduct panoramic imaging and related geospatial technologies within Saudi Arabia. This initiative is part of GEOSA's strategy to regulate, empower, and stimulate the country's geospatial sector, aiming to create an advanced technological environment supported by smart geospatial solutions.
According to Saudi Press Agency, this authorization allows for the utilization of advanced imaging technologies to support smart transportation systems and the development of high-precision digital road maps. These maps are crucial for enabling advanced driver assistance systems, such as GM's hands-free Super Cruise technology. Super Cruise employs high-definition LiDAR maps to offer enhanced safety and precision on the road, which contributes to improved road and passenger safety and potentially saves lives.
Super Cruise technology also aims to reduce human error, boost mobility, and support innovation within the automotive sector, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. The technology is expected to cover over 36,000 kilometers of highways across various regions in the Kingdom.
GM Middle East is the first company in Saudi Arabia to receive official approval to undertake such a project, marking a significant milestone in the country's pursuit of advanced autonomous driving solutions.
