Vienna: The General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at its 69th session in Vienna, has elected the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to serve on the agency's Board of Governors for its next term until 2027. According to Saudi Press Agency, the IAEA Board of Governors is composed of 35 member states and is one of the agency's principal decision-making bodies. It plays a central role in reviewing critical issues, including safeguards-the IAEA's measures to verify that the activities of states parties to the Non-Proliferation Treaty are for peaceful purposes. The board also examines the agency's financial statements, program, and budget, and makes recommendations to the General Conference. Saudi Arabia most recently served on the board from 2022 to 2024. Its re-election reflects the confidence of the international community in the Kingdom's active and constructive engagement, as well as its continuous efforts to strengthen international cooperation aimed at harnessing atomic energy for globa l development and peace.
