Riyadh: The native plants of Northern Borders Region exemplify the rich vegetation of the Kingdom's desert environments. Among them, the germander plant (Teucrium polium) stands out as a perennial herbaceous species that grows naturally in arid and semi-desert areas. Its notable ability to adapt to harsh climatic conditions has contributed to its widespread presence across several natural locations in the region.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the germander is a highly branched herbaceous shrub, typically ranging in height from 30 to 50 centimeters. It is distinguished by its slender, predominantly white stems and small, velvety leaves with a grayish-white hue. In some cases, the leaves take on a needle-like form, giving the plant a distinctive appearance among desert flora. Known locally as 'al-Ja'ada,' the plant produces small tubular flowers with a light pink coloration.

It is also characterized by its strong bitterness and pungent aromatic scent, factors that have enhanced its significance among those interested in native plants and natural ecosystems. The plant also holds a place in the folklore associated with wild vegetation in the Arabian Peninsula.

Environmental specialists note that the prevalence of native plants, including 'al-Ja'ada,' reflects the health of the region's natural habitats. They emphasize the importance of preserving vegetation cover as a fundamental element in promoting ecological balance, supporting biodiversity, and combating desertification, in alignment with the Kingdom's environmental sustainability objectives.
