Qassim’s Traditional Water-Drawing Practice Al-Sawani Preserved in Heritage Events

Riyadh:Al-Sawani is a traditional profession deeply rooted in the agricultural life of the Qassim Region, historically used to draw water from deep wells for farm irrigation and livestock before the introduction of modern pumps.

According to Saudi Press Agency, farmers utilized camels and trained animals for Al-Sawani, employing traditional tools such as "Al-Gharb," a leather bucket, and "Al-Rasha," the pulling rope, among other lifting and transport instruments.

The practice was integral to Qassim's agricultural activities and was accompanied by an oral heritage of camel-riders' chants, which were sung during irrigation and have become part of the region's folk memory. Farmer Saleh Al-Hamad emphasized the specialized training required for camels in Al-Sawani work and expressed hope that young people would learn about their ancestors' lives to preserve this cultural heritage.

Although modern irrigation methods have diminished the role of Al-Sawani as a primary water extraction technique, it continues to be celebrated in heritage villages, festivals, and folk events, reflecting a growing interest in documenting and preserving Qassim's cultural heritage.
