Winners Announced for Non-Terrestrial Networks Competition

Hanoi:The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) has revealed the winners of the third edition of the Non-Terrestrial Networks Global Research Competition, organized in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The contest encourages advancements in non-terrestrial networks to enhance next-generation connectivity technologies and promote the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial systems. The announcement took place during the Global Space Connectivity and Sustainability Events.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the competition attracted 81 research papers from 280 researchers and academics, evaluated by over 40 judges. The top prize was awarded to the paper "Affordable Connectivity from the Skies A Subsidy-Aware Pricing Framework for Satellite Services Under Public Budget Constraints." Second place went to "Commercial Aircraft as Sustainable Relays for Satellite Direct-to-Device Access," and third place was claimed by "AI-Enabled Multi-Layer NTN for Rapid Target Acquisition in Desert Search and Rescue."

These papers explored various economic and technical themes. The winning paper proposed a pricing framework for satellite services that supports government consumption while ensuring inclusive service delivery. The second-place entry suggested utilizing commercial aircraft as continuous operation relay stations to enhance satellite coverage. The third-place paper focused on deploying AI algorithms on high-altitude platforms to expedite search and rescue in remote areas.

The competition has maintained strong engagement over its three editions, receiving over 160 research papers from more than 440 researchers, with participation from over 60 judges representing more than 110 universities and research centers.
