Al-Arak Village: The Historic Heart of Miswak Production in AlUla

Alula: Al-Arak village in AlUla is renowned as a historic agricultural center, prominently known for its dense cultivation of the Arak tree (Salvadora persica), the primary source of the traditional miswak toothbrush.

According to Saudi Press Agency, local expert Mohammed Al-Rashoudi emphasized the deep-rooted significance of the Arak tree in the area's identity. Ancient inscriptions confirm its longstanding presence, and historically, the tree's abundance was a crucial source of livelihood for local residents.

The Arak tree holds more than just religious significance and oral health benefits; its leaves and fruit are also utilized in traditional medicine. Presently, the local community collaborates with the Royal Commission for AlUla to preserve these native plants. This joint effort is crucial in ensuring the sustainability of this desert-adapted species, which remains an integral part of AlUla's environmental and cultural heritage.
