Al-Qurayyat Salt Festival Spotlights Traditional Salt Harvesting

Al-qurayyat: Al-Qurayyat Governorate in northern Saudi Arabia's Al-Jouf Region is known for traditional salt extraction and is often called Qurayyat al-Milh (Qurayyat of Salt). Salt has long provided economic value for residents and was historically traded beyond the governorate.

According to Saudi Press Agency, salt is harvested the traditional way: water is pooled in local salt pans, left to evaporate under the sun until crystals form, then workers gather the salt for everyday use.

The first Al-Qurayyat salt festival opened on October 30 for a 10-day run, highlighting the craft's history, its role in local life and its commercial significance across the Kingdom.
