‘Basta Khair’ Initiative Revives Spindle’s Presence in Ramadan Scene in Northern Borders Region

Arar: The ‘Basta Khair Saudi Arabia’ initiative, organized by Northern Borders Region Municipality in cooperation with the Social Development Bank (SDB) in Arar, highlighted the craft of the spindle as a companion of northern women. The event will continue until the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the spindle is used in Al Sadu weaving, spinning threads, twisting and stretching them before weaving-a time-consuming craft that women in the past practiced from early morning until sunset. Wool and camel-hair weaving are among the oldest traditional crafts, drawing on tools and resources available in the local environment. Saudi women, particularly in the Northern Borders Region, wove wool to provide their households with Al Sadu mats and other essentials.

Participants competed in presenting traditional dishes that feature prominently on Ramadan tables, through designated booths showcasing local products, alongside live demonstrations of handicrafts and cultural and artistic performances highlighting the national identity and folk heritage of Northern Borders Region. The event also includes entertainment programs for children aimed at developing their skills, offering visitors a comprehensive experience.

The initiative seeks to support and empower street vendors and productive families by providing an organized and safe environment to display their products, thereby strengthening the local economy, expanding employment opportunities, and promoting a culture of self-employment and entrepreneurship.
