Earthquake Recorded in Eastern Region This Morning; Saudi Geological Survey Reports No Damage

Riyadh: Spokesperson for the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) Tariq Aba Al-Khail reported that an earthquake was recorded by the National Seismicity Monitoring Network in Eastern Region at 1:11 AM today, local time.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the earthquake measured 4.0 on the Richter scale at a depth of approximately 8 km. It occurred at coordinates 24.1323° N latitude and 49.1572° E longitude. The tremor caused no damage due to its low magnitude.

The earthquake resulted from tectonic stresses from the collision of the Arabian and Eurasian geological plates in the Zagros Mountains of Iran. This collision activated existing faults in the Earth's crust in Eastern Region of the Kingdom.
