Zurich: FIFA has announced a series of pioneering technological innovations for the 2025 Club World Cup, aimed at enhancing the fan experience, raising the level of transparency in refereeing, and improving the efficiency of organizational processes during the tournament.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the new innovations include the use of body-mounted cameras for referees, after approval from the International Football Association Board (IFAB). Footage will be used during live broadcasts to provide fans with a new perspective from the referee's perspective, contributing to a better understanding of the game. The results of this trial will be used to develop future guidelines for the use of this type of camera.
Footage of the referee's review will be broadcast live on giant screens inside the stadiums, enabling fans to follow the details of refereeing decisions during on-field reviews, enhancing the clarity of procedures and reflecting FIFA's commitment to transparency.
The event will feature an advanced version of semi-automated offside technology, relying on artificial intelligence, an in-ball sensor, and several cameras to accurately pinpoint player positions and send instant notifications to referees. The assistant referee will continue to play a key role in complex situations. For the first time, advanced algorithms will be used to analyze live match data, along with the use of tablets to manage substitutions instead of paper forms, with the aim of speeding up processes and improving coordination between teams and referees.
FIFA Secretary General Matthijs Grafstr¶m emphasized that these innovations reflect the association's commitment to developing football through technology, providing a smoother fan experience, and improving the refereeing decision-making environment.
Pierluigi Collina, Chairman of FIFA's Referees Committee, expressed his confidence that these updates will contribute to enhancing fans' understanding of refereeing decisions and consolidating the tournament's position as a platform for innovation.
