Riyadh:Green Riyadh, under the oversight of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, is advancing its efforts to plant trees throughout the capital as the afforestation season begins. The initiative is focused on selecting tree species that are best suited to the local environment and the specific characteristics of each planting site. The goal is to expand vegetation cover, provide shade, enhance the urban landscape, and improve the quality of life for residents.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Green Riyadh's projects involve a diverse range of tree species that are strategically chosen to suit various locations such as roads, squares, parking lots, parks, and natural areas. This strategic approach facilitates the integration of tree planting into the city's infrastructure, catering to the needs of residents while promoting sustainable green spaces.
Among the species being planted are local sidr and Indian almond trees, which are used along roads, in squares, parks, and parking lots. Parkinsonia trees are being placed in parking lots, squares, and parks, while samr trees are designated for natural areas and roadside planting. Additionally, Cassia glauca and neem trees are being planted in parks, squares, and residential areas.
The tree-planting program is supported by an integrated system managed by Green Riyadh nurseries, which produces trees, shrubs, and ground cover plants. This system also includes the installation of irrigation networks and the use of treated water to meet the project's requirements and ensure sustainability. These efforts contribute to reducing temperatures, improving air quality, and providing green spaces that encourage outdoor activities such as walking.
