Jazan:The unique agro-climatic conditions of the Jazan Region play a crucial role in strengthening Saudi Arabia's domestic food production. The area supports a wide array of tropical fruits, cereals, oilseeds, and vegetables, benefiting from both coastal plains and mountainous terraces.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Jazan's agricultural achievements are highlighted as the region marks World Food Day on October 16. The region's agricultural indicators demonstrate its significant contributions to national food security, supply chain resilience, and the growth of food processing and commercial opportunities.
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's branch in Jazan reports that the region hosts around one million mango trees, producing approximately 65,000 tons annually. This production supports seasonal trade, cold-chain transport, and juice manufacturing. The region also boasts about 800,000 papaya trees yielding over 40,000 tons, and over one million banana trees producing roughly 15,000 tons annually. In addition, fig cultivation spans 346 farms with 480,000 trees, producing about 9,600 tons per year, alongside guava and custard apple trees contributing to the region's fruit output.
Field and cash crops are another cornerstone of Jazan's agricultural economy. Sorghum fields cover more than 60,000 hectares, with an annual harvest exceeding 55,000 tons, serving as staples for local consumption and livestock feed. Sesame farming covers over 6,400 hectares, yielding more than 6,422 tons of seeds annually.
Vegetable production, including tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, zucchini, okra, peppers, and leafy greens, is sustained through advanced farming practices like greenhouse farming and modern irrigation systems, which help conserve water.
In the highlands, rehabilitated mountain terraces and rainwater-harvesting infrastructure support sustainable farming while preventing soil erosion. Facilities for sorting, cold storage, and integrated logistics aid in reducing post-harvest losses, empowering small and medium-sized enterprises, and advancing Saudi Vision 2030's food security goals.
