Riyadh: The King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies has released the Arabic translation of Helen Loveday’s influential book, “Islamic Paper: A Study of the Ancient Craft,” adding to its growing collection of translated scholarly works.
According to Saudi Press Agency, this translated publication offers an in-depth exploration of the ancient craft of Islamic papermaking within the context of codicology. Helen Loveday’s detailed research is based on an examination of over a thousand dated paper samples from diverse documentary collections.
The book provides a thorough historical overview of the development and characteristics of Islamic papermaking, tracing its origins and evolution from the 6th Hijri century (12th century CE) to the 13th Hijri century (19th century CE). It highlights significant milestones in the craft’s history and its spread throughout the Arab East.
In addition, Loveday’s work introduces a framework for classifying, analyzing, and comparing Islamic papers, offering valuable insights into this important aspect of cultural heritage.
