Makkah: The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites has implemented a series of development projects in the central area surrounding the Grand Mosque to improve pedestrian flow and enhance the readiness of critical high-density routes, as part of the on-ground preparations for the 1446 AH Hajj season.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the works included expanding sidewalks and walkways over an area exceeding 235,000 square meters to provide greater freedom of movement for pedestrians, enhance connectivity between the Grand Mosque courtyards and nearby transport routes and facilities, and create over 30,000 square meters of shaded areas to reduce heat impact on pilgrims and worshippers. The prayer courtyards were also expanded to accommodate more than 60,000 additional worshippers.
As part of complementary efforts, a specialized coating technology was applied to exposed surfaces in key locations to mitigate the effect of sun exposure, contributing to a temperature reduction of approximately 15 degrees Celsius. Golf carts were also provided to facilitate movement for the elderly and people with disabilities within restricted pedestrian zones, and commercial facades were reorganized. These initiatives align with a comprehensive strategy to enhance the urban landscape surrounding the Grand Mosque. The efforts extend beyond physical expansion to include the organization of human flow and functional integration with the public transport network, aiming to ensure a smooth and seamless movement between gathering and departure points within the central area.
