Ramadan Crescent Moon Meets Jupiter, Epsilon in Northern Borders Sky

Riyadh: The 10th of Ramadan crescent moon was observed at dawn yesterday in a striking conjunction with the star Epsilon and the planet Jupiter, creating a beautiful astronomical display across the skies of Northern Borders Region, remaining visible until moonset under clear conditions that provided optimal viewing.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Astronomy and Space Club member Adnan Khalifa explained that the star Epsilon, historically known to ancient Arabs as Al Dhira' Al-Mabsuta (The Extended Arm) and used to map the sky and track its phases, is a bright giant star in the constellation Gemini.

He noted that although the star is known by several traditional names, it is officially designated Epsilon Geminorum by the International Astronomical Union. Distinguished by its clear brightness within Gemini, it is easily observable with the naked eye under suitable conditions.

Khalifa emphasized that such astronomical phenomena provide a valuable opportunity for amateur astronomers to identify the positions of stars and planets, fostering greater public interest in the field. He also stressed the importance of distinguishing this star from Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, which occupies a completely different position and has distinct characteristics.
