Flexible Rubber Asphalt: An Engineering Innovation That Improves Pilgrim Comfort and Promotes Sustainability

Riyadh: The innovation of flexible rubber asphalt represents a qualitative leap in infrastructure engineering and is used to improve the quality and comfort of roads.

According to Saudi Press Agency, this technology recycles used tires, transforming them into a flexible asphalt layer that absorbs impact and provides comfortable walking paths. These smart surfaces help absorb shock and relieve pressure on the body's joints, especially the ankles and feet, providing comfort while walking and running, which leads to improved overall health and enhanced quality of life for pilgrims.

Experiments announced by the Roads General Authority (RGA) indicated that asphalt surfaces and regular sidewalks cause strong reactions on pilgrims' ankles and feet, especially the elderly, who constitute 53% of pilgrims. This conclusion increased pressure on healthcare facilities during the Hajj season, with 38% of injuries concentrated in the foot and ankle area.

The technology aims to provide flexible rubber asphalt for pedestrian walkways, offering greater comfort and flexibility while walking or running. Several experiments of flexible paving have been implemented at RGA's center.

The initiative is witnessing a 33% expansion compared to the Hajj season 1445 AH, with work on the road extending from Namirah Mosque to Al-Mashaer train station in Arafat, bringing the total area to 16,000 square meters.
