Cairo: Activities continued today on the second and final day of the 13th meeting of Arab National Committees for International Humanitarian Law, held at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo. The meeting reviewed the efforts of several Arab countries in implementing international humanitarian law, as well as the role of the Arab League in this regard.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the Kingdom, Kuwait, Palestine, Iraq, Algeria, Qatar, Lebanon, Jordan, and Oman presented their respective experiences and efforts in the implementation of international humanitarian law.
Secretary General of the Standing Committee of International Humanitarian Law Dr. Abdullah Al-Ruwaili, representing the Kingdom's delegation, delivered a presentation outlining Saudi Arabia's efforts in implementing international humanitarian law. He detailed the key responsibilities and objectives of the Standing Committee and its notable achievements.
Dr. Al-Ruwaili emphasized the committee's local and international vision, which includes spreading knowledge of international humanitarian law, enhancing the legislative environment, aligning international conventions with national legislation related to IHL and its customary rules, organizing seminars, and providing consultations to stakeholders to increase awareness. The committee also aims to strengthen cooperation with international bodies concerned with the law's implementation and review international treaties and agreements related to IHL to bolster the provisions of the four Geneva Conventions and their two Additional Protocols at the international level.
The two-day meeting featured a panel discussion on international humanitarian law and the challenges posed by contemporary armed conflicts. It also reviewed emerging methods of warfare, such as cyber warfare and artificial intelligence, and included a panel discussion on the global initiative to renew political commitment to international humanitarian law.
