King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Launches Power Line Insulation Initiative to Protect Migratory Birds from Electrocution

Riyadh: The King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Development Authority launched an initiative to install protective insulators on power lines in Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) within the reserve. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with relevant government and private-sector entities as part of the reserve's environmental sustainability programs aimed at protecting resident and migratory birds from electrocution.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the initiative seeks to eliminate bird fatalities caused by electrocution and collisions with power infrastructure within the reserve and its five globally significant bird and biodiversity areas. It also aims to protect populations of griffon vultures, lapwings, and other birds of prey that inhabit the reserve.

The authority noted that the initiative supports the reserve's objectives of conserving biodiversity and protecting internationally important bird habitats. It also contributes to improving the survival and reproduction of threatened species and supports efforts to monitor and assess the effectiveness of measures to reduce bird mortality from electrocution.

The initiative also aligns with international standards aimed at minimizing the impact of energy infrastructure on bird populations and reinforces the reserve's position as a national and regional model for wildlife protection and biodiversity conservation.
