Jeddah:The Red Sea Museum is set to host "Photographing Distance: Matilde Marín" from October 8 to December 31, 2026, marking the Argentine artist's debut exhibition in Saudi Arabia.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the exhibition will showcase Matilde Marín's exploration of lighthouses through photography and video, connecting her work with the maritime histories, journeys, and coastal memories of the Red Sea. The exhibit will highlight the lighthouses of Jeddah and Yanbu.
Since 2005, Marín has worked on the Pharus Project, capturing lighthouses worldwide and portraying them as symbols of guidance, hope, and orientation. At the Red Sea Museum, her work takes on a local aspect, linking the lighthouses of Jeddah and Yanbu with the Red Sea's historic routes, blending contemporary art with maritime heritage.
Eng. Abdullah Al-Hammad, CEO of the Museums Commission, noted that "Photographing Distance" exemplifies how museums can become dynamic spaces where contemporary art reflects history and offers new perspectives on the Red Sea.
Matilde Marín expressed that her two-decade journey with lighthouses has taught her about distance and the aspiration to reach the unreachable. The exhibition's opening will feature art, dialogue, and music, alongside a public program including film screenings, poetry, musical performances, and workshops. Highlights involve sessions on photography, landscape, and memory-related activities, fostering a connection between Marín's work and the Red Sea.
The exhibition aligns with the Museums Commission's efforts to enhance Saudi Arabia's cultural landscape and promote museums as cultural exchange platforms. By showcasing both local and international art, the commission aims to engage audiences in meaningful cultural experiences.
