Dr. Khalid Ahmed Hassan, Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Undersecretary for Animal Wealth Resources, received a delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

During the meeting, Dr. Hassan revealed that the ministry and the FAO have established a partnership to conduct a study regarding options to support local producers.

The Undersecretary indicated that a strategic framework for food security has been prepared in partnership between Bahrain and the FAO, noting that the study resulted in the adoption of several initiatives to improve agricultural methods and modern sustainable systems that aim to support food security programmes to achieve local high self-sufficiency rates.

He highlighted the keenness of Bahrain and the FAO to develop a strategic framework for food security that depends on local sustainable production that uses creative methods as well as benefit from various investments and commercial partners, in addition to enhancing nutrition, food utilization, and reducing food loss and waste, as well as improve planning for food reserves.

The Undersecretary added the FAO will carry out an analytical study of options to support local producers, including supporting production, storage, and marketing activities to increase their contribution to food security, which will reduce dependence on imports.

The Undersecretary for Animal Wealth Resources noted that the analytical study will conduct a field survey that will identify areas of support for local producers and make recommendations to the ministry to implement the type of support required.

He pointed out that options and areas to support poultry and fish production will be included in this study, specifically increasing the contribution of the local poultry industry to food security, and reducing dependence on imports.
