Nuclear, Radiological Emergencies Conference Opens in Riyadh with Over 100 Countries

Riyadh: The International Conference on Preparedness and Response to Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies (EPR2025) kicked off in Riyadh on Monday, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in cooperation with the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC).

According to Saudi Press Agency, the four-day event is held under the theme 'Building the Future in an Evolving World' and brings together international and local entities, specialists, and experts representing more than 100 countries. The conference features over 120 scientific papers, 100 posters, and extensive panel sessions involving more than 700 experts and specialists from over 100 countries, alongside more than six international organizations.

Discussions will examine best practices and ways to strengthen preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological emergencies. A parallel exhibition includes national and international bodies presenting their experience in emergency readiness and response, along with global companies showcasing technologies that support effective response to nuclear and radiological emergencies.

In the opening ceremony, the NRRC said the concept of emergency preparedness is continually evolving to keep pace with new developments and emerging realities, apply modern technologies, and enhance integration among national entities. Preparedness, the commission added, is a system built collectively by governments, experts, and communities through sustained efforts grounded in proactivity, effective communication, and timely action.

The IAEA highlighted the importance of developing sustainable national capacities in emergency preparedness and strengthening response systems at both national and international levels. It also underscored the need to support information exchange among countries and expand technical cooperation to improve the efficiency of managing nuclear and radiological emergencies and limit their impact.

The IAEA stressed the role of the international instruments it oversees, to which Saudi Arabia is a party, and the need to consider developing their procedures and regulatory dimensions. The agency also pointed to the international platforms and integration networks under its supervision, in which the Kingdom participates, describing them as key to advancing global emergency response.

The EPR2025 is the first conference of its kind to be held outside IAEA headquarters, marking a global milestone. It aims to bolster readiness and enhance capabilities for dealing with nuclear and radiological emergencies. The event provides a platform to exchange knowledge and experience, discuss emerging challenges and innovations, as well as review mechanisms that strengthen integration between national and international systems in emergency situations.

Saudi Arabia's selection as host reflects its advanced standing in the global nuclear safety framework, the development of its regulatory infrastructure, and its growing capacity to support international efforts in nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response.
