The Roads General Authority has stressed that Saudi Arabia has made continuous progress in environment conservation as it hosts the Kingdom's first Road Safety and Sustainability Conference and Exhibition, under the theme "Innovating for Tomorrow" and in partnership with the International Road Federation, from November 3 to 4. The authority emphasized that its environment conservation efforts span all operations across the road network. The Saudi Highway Code includes a set of environment codes with requirements and specifications related to assessing, mitigating, and monitoring the environmental impacts of road projects. These codes cover all stages of the project lifecycle, including concept, planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance, in compliance with relevant Saudi regulations. The authority has adopted numerous studies, research, and scientific innovations that contribute to environmental conservation, improve quality of life, enhance safety, and support the strategic objectives of th e road sector. These innovations include the use of locally produced road cooling materials that absorb less solar radiation, helping to reduce the heat island effect, which increases energy consumption and air pollution. The authority has also incorporated construction and demolition waste into asphalt mixes, utilized recycled rubber from tires, and reused milled asphalt. Meanwhile, the authority has recently launched a trial for using advanced equipment that fully recycles asphalt layers and underlying materials on-site known as Full Depth Reclamation (FDR), a cold in-place recycling technique. The FDR method reduces costs by 40-70% compared to traditional maintenance, minimizes traffic disruption, lowers carbon emissions, conserves raw materials, and reuses up to 100% of existing site materials, while also reducing project duration by over 40%. These efforts underscore the commitment to achieving the highest environmental sustainability standards and providing a safer, more comfortable environment for roa d users in the Kingdom.
