Riyadh: Northern Borders Region has recently witnessed the emergence and rapid spread of the Russian thistle (Salsola kali) across several desert areas and sandy plains.
According to Saudi Press Agency, this plant typically thrives in open areas with little to no other vegetation. It is often found in regions previously affected by overgrazing, serving as a biological indicator of past environmental degradation prior to ecosystem recovery.
Head of the Aman Environmental Association in Northern Borders Region Nasser Al-Majlad explained that the Russian thistle is notable for its resilience to drought and salinity. As a member of the Salsola genus, this spiny, succulent annual herb can grow up to 100 cm in height. It also contributes to soil stabilization, reduces erosion, and serves as a food source for camels and ruminants before its spines develop.
