Rome, The National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases (Weqaa) participated in the International Year of Camelids Exhibition, hosted by Saudi Arabia in Rome between June 10-14, presenting the evolution of the camelid sector in the country, to mark the International Year of Camelids, observed this year. The event took place on the sidelines of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) General Assembly. Weqaa was part of the Saudi delegation to highlight the government's efforts to safeguard camel health. The center plays a crucial role in preventing and combating animal diseases. Its camel protection strategies include conducting animal disease surveys, encouraging best practices in camel breeding, strengthening biosecurity at facilities producing camel products, supporting efforts to provide high-quality veterinary treatments and preventatives, educating camel breeders on disease-prevention methods, and ensuring that camel products are free from pathogens. Weqaa al so collaborates with academic and domestic and international research institutions to advance camel health research. Its participation in the exhibition underscores the center's commitment to fostering international cultural exchange and the importance of preserving heritage, in line with Saudi Vision 2030 goals of achieving sustainable animal production through One Health, "an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems", according to WHO.
