Secretary General of the OIC suspends the status of the Special Envoy of Sweden to the Organization

The Secretariat General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation informed today, Sunday, the Government of Sweden that it had decided to suspend the status of the Special Envoy of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Organization, in line with the recommendations of the final statement issued by the Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation at its extraordinary meeting held on July 2, 2023.

According to what was published by the “UNA” Agency, during the meeting, the Secretary-General was asked to consider possible steps to review the official framework linking the General Secretariat to any country in which copies of the Holy Qur’an, other Islamic values, and Islamic symbols are being desecrated, which takes place with the consent of the concerned country, including suspending the status of the Special Envoy.

The Secretary-General was informed of this decision in a letter addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden.

On the other hand, the Secretary-General welcomed the measures taken by some Member States to protest the repeated attacks on Islamic sanctities.

He called on all Member States to take the sovereign decisions they deem appropriate to express its refusal to grant licenses to the Swedish authorities; It enabled the repeated abuse of the sanctity of the Holy Qur’an and Islamic symbols, and the expression of the organization’s countries’ rejection of these disgraceful acts, under the pretext of freedom of expression.

The Secretary-General stressed the importance of taking the necessary legislative measures to criminalize such attacks, bearing in mind that the exercise of freedom of expression entails special duties and responsibilities./ End
