The Coordination Framework called on the House of Representatives to proceed with the first reading of the law.
He said in a statement that “the Coordination Framework held its regular meeting today, Monday, in Nouri al-Maliki’s office, calling on the House of Representatives to proceed with the first reading of the Personal Status Law,” explaining that “the draft law regulates matters related to the special status of each sect or religion and does not cancel the current law.”
The Coordination Framework explained that “amending the Personal Status Law is consistent with the constitution, which stipulates that Iraqis are free to make their choices in a manner that does not conflict with the constants of Sharia and the foundations of democracy.”
