Justice Minister Meets with Criminal Court Presidents, Stresses Criminal Law Principles and Defendant Rights

Riyadh: Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Walid Al-Samaani stressed the importance of applying established principles of criminal law. Key to this is enhancing judges' legal and professional skills through ongoing training and specialized diplomas offered by the ministry, such as the Higher Diploma in Criminal Law.

According to Saudi Press Agency, in yesterday's meeting with the presidents of criminal courts in Riyadh, Al-Samaani urged the prompt resolution of pending cases to prevent delays, which infringe on litigants' rights and undermine the administration of justice.

He underscored the need for court presidents to oversee the efficient handling of urgent applications in line with statutory requirements, particularly bail requests from defendants or their counsel, and pre-indictment emergency petitions.

The minister also highlighted the court presidents' critical role in ensuring the quality of judgments, expediting proceedings, and verifying that judges properly classify and qualify offenses to uphold justice.

The meeting addressed the vital need to safeguard defendants' rights, including access to legal representation, notification of charges, and provision of the indictment. Courts must also furnish reasoned decisions and address material defenses, as mandated by applicable laws.
