Makkah: The Neuroscience Center at King Abdullah Medical City successfully saved the life of an Indonesian pilgrim who suffered a complex acute stroke while in Arafat. She underwent a precise neuro-intervention following an urgent air evacuation by the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, as part of the urgent care pathway within the Saudi healthcare system.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the medical city, a member of Makkah Health Cluster, said the patient was transferred through the approved stroke pathway after she developed acute neurological symptoms. Clinical assessments and advanced imaging revealed multiple complex clots in small cerebral arteries, as well as brain regions that were still viable and could be saved through urgent intervention.
The medical team responded immediately and decided to proceed with diagnostic and therapeutic cerebral angiography, the medical city said. An advanced neuro-intervention was performed using microcatheters and targeted intra-arterial therapy, in addition to mechanical thrombectomy, successfully restoring blood flow to the brain.
The treatment plan was continued in the neuro-intensive care unit under close specialist monitoring.
The case reflects integrated air evacuation, emergency response, and neuro-intervention services at the medical city. It also highlights the efficiency of Saudi Arabia's healthcare system in managing critical cases during the Hajj season in line with the highest standards of specialized care.
