Pulicaria Undulata: Northern Borders Region’s Resilient Desert Plant

Riyadh: Pulicaria undulata is a vibrant testament to the rich botanical diversity of Saudi Arabia's Northern Borders Region. This wild desert species thrives in valleys, floodplains, and meadows-especially in areas nourished by seasonal torrents and characterized by clay or sandy soils.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Pulicaria undulata, a member of the Asteraceae family, is a dwarf shrub that can be either annual or perennial, typically growing to a height of 40 to 50 centimeters. Its dense, interwoven branches emerge from the base, forming a distinctive dome-like or hemispherical shape.

The plant's olive-green leaves are alternately arranged, sessile, and covered in fine hairs, giving them a coarse texture-an essential adaptation for thriving in arid desert climates.

In spring, Pulicaria undulata bursts into bloom with clusters of small, bright yellow flowers, each just 8 millimeters in diameter. These fragrant blossoms are a magnet for bees, playing a vital role in pollination and supporting the region's biodiversity.
