Saudi Arabia Strengthens its International Efforts in Water Resources Management During Parties Meeting in Slovenia

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has indicated that its vision extends beyond the conventional framework of shared water management. The country aims to adopt a comprehensive approach to water resource management through the exchange of expertise and capacity building to address common environmental challenges, according to a news release from the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture. This statement was made during Saudi Arabia's participation, represented by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, in the Tenth Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (MOP 10). The Saudi delegation was led by Deputy Minister for Water Dr. Abdulaziz Alshaibani and included experts and specialists from the ministry. Dr. Alshaibani remarked, "Saudi Arabia's establishment of the Global Water Organization underscores its efforts to enhance international action to preserve water resources through sustainable cooperation and promote innovation in financing water-related projects." He added that Saudi Arabia also played a pivotal role in placing water on the G20 agenda, reflecting the nation's belief in the importance of transboundary cooperation in water resources for sustainable development and regional integration. MOP 10 featured a high-level session titled 'Our Waters, Our Future: Transboundary Water Cooperation to Power Climate Resilience.' The meeting aimed to make decisions, review the third report on the implementation of the Water Convention, and discuss aspects of cooperation in transboundary waters to strengthen climate resilience and sustainable development. The tenth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention (MOP 10) is taking place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from October 23 to 25, 2024. It is organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning of the Republic of Slovenia, on behalf of the Slovenian government, in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Water Convention, hosted by the Unit ed Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). More than 500 representatives from about 80 countries, including parties and non-parties to the Water Convention, are attending to work toward water security and improved water management.
