Saudi Water Authority Chronicles Half-Century of Desalination Progress

Riyadh: The Saudi Water Authority (SWA), in collaboration with the King Abdulaziz Foundation (Dara), has released a comprehensive book titled "The Desalination Journey in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia." This publication meticulously documents the evolution of the water desalination sector in Saudi Arabia over the past fifty years, highlighting its transformation into a global leader in the industry. The book emphasizes the significant achievements and milestones in the water sector, attributing these successes to the unwavering support and guidance of Saudi Arabia's leadership, which has been instrumental in enhancing water and environmental sustainability in line with the goals of Vision 2030.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the book details the journey that began with the establishment of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) and its progress over five decades. It serves as a source of pride for citizens, offering insights into the importance of water in the Arabian Peninsula, a region historically challenged by limited water resources. The narrative recounts the efforts of Saudi leaders, starting with King Abdulaziz, to secure water through well-digging and modern extraction techniques, emphasizing the critical role of water in the nation's development and prosperity.

The book highlights a pivotal moment in 1964 when ideas for a sustainable water solution emerged, leading to the inception of seawater desalination projects. This initiative, spearheaded by Prince Muhammad bin Faisal bin Abdulaziz, laid the groundwork for the establishment of widespread desalination systems and water networks. Over time, these efforts evolved into a vast network that supplies water across Saudi Arabia's extensive landscape, marking a significant achievement for the SWCC.

In addition to chronicling past achievements, the book provides a detailed timeline of the SWCC's significant events and accomplishments, particularly under the reign of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Notably, the Corporation increased its daily water production from 3.5 million cubic meters to over 5 million cubic meters by 2017, while maintaining cost efficiency. By 2023, the number of desalination systems expanded to 33, with a total daily production reaching 7.5 million cubic meters.

A landmark development occurred on May 7, 2024, with the Saudi Council of Ministers, led by King Salman, transforming the SWCC into the "Saudi Water Authority," establishing it as the regulator of water services activities. The book further explores the SWCC's initiatives beyond desalination, including innovation, research, and digital transformation, which have been crucial in sustaining its achievements.

Throughout its history, the SWCC has garnered numerous awards and recognition at both local and international levels, underscoring its vital role in the Kingdom's social and economic development. The Corporation's contributions extend to various sectors, including industry and agriculture, and play a pivotal role in supplying water during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.

The publication concludes by linking the SWCC's ongoing and future projects with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, recognizing key leaders in the desalination process and outlining the Corporation's strategic direction.
