German unemployment rate remains constant in March at 5.7%

In Germany, the unemployment rate for March remained constant compared to February at 5.7%, amid an only gradual recovery, the Federal Employment Agency said on Friday.

The rate is 0.6 points above the same month last year, according to the agency’s latest monthly statistics. The number of people out of work in Germany fell slightly, by 26,000 to 2.594 million people in March, compared to the previous month, the agency said. The total number of unemployed is 232,000 higher than it was in March 2022, dpa reported.

Overall in Germany, the number of people employed is still high, with 45.6 million people holding jobs in February, 423,000 more than in February 2022 and 31,000 more than in January of this year. However, the demand for labour has fallen slightly, the agency noted.

Some 777,000 job vacancies were reported to the agency in March, down 62,000 compared to a year ago. Friday’s figures are based on data that was available up to March 13.
